Thanks very much Oswald. Yes it’s been extremely cold, getting down to -18 degrees at one point in the last week, which is very unusual according to the growers I’ve spoken to. However, it’s so dry that there isn’t any frost at all (not enough water in the air to create one).

Didn’t you take your long-johns? Of course, thermal leggings is not the best look while carrying a glass of champoo I will readily admit. That said, champagne and cold weather are remarkably well suited (as are champagne and warm weather, though we can leave that discussion for the summer posts). I am reminded of spending new year in a log cabin 100 miles north of the arctic circle. Floodlit skiing during the day, sauna in the evening and the bottles chilled in a large drift of snow, naturally.

Excellent reportage Hugo. Thanks very much. When I last visited the area whilst in Chalons en Champagne it was in late March and the weather was balmy.

Hugo,

Just a note to thank you for a fun and educational time had on the ‘Behind the Label’ evening. I have just gone through my paltry collection of wines and realised that there are very few of merit there – and I could have done so much better had I attended your course earlier! I won’t be caught out by slick marketing labelling so easily in the future. And I approach my next restaurant wine list with a renewed confidence (and your helpful notes in my back pocket of course!).

I will certainly be attending future courses – highly recommended.
